What is Prediabetes?

As the name indicates, prediabetes is the precursor stage of diabetes mellitus (leading cause of morbidity and mortality), which is a clue that the person would (by all means) develop diabetes mellitus in future.

Causes of Prediabetes

  • Prediabetes occurs when your body becomes insulin resistant (unable to use insulin which helps in transporting excessive sugar in the blood into the cells) or when your pancreas doesn’t produce required amounts of insulin.
  • Family history of diabetes mellitus and genetics play an important role.
  • According to Ayurveda sitting and sleeping comforts, excessive consumption of curds, milk, meat of animals living in desert like and marshy areas and acquatic animals can lead to prediabetes.
  • Freshly grown paddy (rice) and fresh rain water, foods prepared using sugar and jiggery can also cause prediabetes (and also diabetes).

 10 Common Signs of Prediabetes

  1. Increased fatigue
  2. Frequent urination
  3. Constant hunger
  4. Unexplained weight loss / weight gain
  5. Fatigue
  6. Blurred vision
  7. Slow healing of cuts and bruises
  8. Loss of feeling in hands or feet
  9. Recurrent skin, gum, vaginal or urinary infections
  10. High BMI (body mass index)

 Diagnosis of Prediabetes

Fasting blood sugar (glucose) level of:

  • 110-125 mg/dL (6.1mM/L-6.9mM/L) – WHO criteria
  • 100-125 mg/dL (5.6mM/L-6.9mM/L) – ADA criteria

Two hour glucose tolerance test after ingesting the standardized 75 gm glucose solution, the blood sugar level of 140-199 mg/dL

Glycated haemoglobin (HbA1C) between 5.7 and 6.4 %

Note: Levels above these limits would justify the diagnosis for diabetes.

9  Immensely Helpful Ayurvedic ways of prevention and cure of Prediabetes

 

Ayurveda provides unparalleled remedies to cure prediabetes and also to prevent the consequential diabetes mellitus.

 

The below mentioned are the tips for preventing and curing prediabetes and preventing diabetes mellitus.

 

1.Shodhana (cleansing treatments) including Panchakarma measures shall be administered

 

for strong  patients and obese patients with prediabetes.

 

Following this Santarpana Chikitsa (nourishing treatments) should be done.

 

 

 2. For those who are weak and lean, treatments like Brimhana (bulk promoting) and balya (strengthening) shall be adopted.

Samshamana Chikitsa or palliative treatments using herbal powders, decoctions, powder of barley,

and light food are recommended.

 

3.Food including or prepared with yava or barley, processed with Triphala, green gram recipes,

use of turmeric, all fat and kapha destroying foods (low fat foods) are ideal in prevention

and treatment of prediabetes.

 

4.Physical exercise is said to destroy morbid kapha and meda (fat) which are the prime causative factors

of diabetes and prediabetes.

Therefore, Ayurveda advocates exercise as a remedy and preventive measure for prediabetes.

 

5.Regular administration of powder massage, tub bath with medicated liquids and parisheka (stream

pouring over the body with medicated liquids) are effective remedies.

 

6.Shirodhara, Shirovasti and Sarvanga Dhara (Pizhichil) help in prevention of stress factor which is also a

chief culprit in causation of prediabetes and diabetes also is preventive and curative for both conditions.

 

7.Disease modifying medicines and compounds like Nishamalaki, Shilajatu, Nishakathakadi Kashayam,

etc. are beneficial.

 

8.Use of herbs like turmeric, Daruharidra, Triphala, Amalaki, Mudga, Yava, Lodhra, etc. is beneficial.

 

9. Incorporating effective Yoga asanas like Dhanurasana, Ardhamatsyendrasana, Vajrasana, Pavana

Muktasana, Matsyasana, Halasana, Sarvangasana etc, meditation and Pranayama will help in

 prevention and cure of prediabetes.
